It is in the Mid-Republic that gladiatorialmunera appear, and once they had first appeared, they were embraced; along with other events, they were vowed by relatives to commemorate close male kin as part of funeral celebrations; they could be held during the funeral or delayed until they would help the holder in a political campaigned.
The first we know of occurred in at games Decimus Junius Brutus held for his father; there three pairs of gladiators fought in the Thracian style.
To honor his father, Decimus Junius Brutus was the first one to organize a gladiatorial munus.
